Win Over Bugs With These Pest Control Ideas

Natural-Pest-Control

Are there pests in your life? Are you tired of seeing pests invade the food in your pantry? Are you embarrassed to invite people over because of your pests? You do not have to put up with pests anymore. This article will teach you how you can get rid of your pests effectively and safely with a natural pest control in Sydney.

If you have children, explain to them the rules around the house for eating. Make sure that you designate only one area of the home for eating to help reduce any infestations that you may have. If all members of the house are responsible for what they do, you will have less of a pest problem.Non-Toxic-Pest-Control

Don’t keep food out. Every time you make a meal, make sure to cover it and even better, put it in the refrigerator or in an air-tight container. Pests are better at smelling than people are, and if they smell something tasty, they are going to come looking for it. Make sure you don’t leave food out too long.

Store flour, cereals, sugar, and other dry goods in sealed plastic, glass, or metal containers. This prevents invasions of pantry moths, weevils, ants, and even mice in your kitchen. Do not count on cardboard or other flimsy packaging to keep pests out. Mice can chew through them, and insects can penetrate tiny openings even plastic.Pest-Control

Do you have a problem with rodents invading your home? Walk around the perimeter of your home and try to locate small cracks that might be allowing pests inside. Fill cracks or install a metallic piece of mesh to eliminate those entry points. This is a great non toxic and organic way of doing pest control.

Be preventative, not just reactive. Yes, you want to eliminate those pest problems in a natural, non toxic and organic way, but be sure to also treat how the problem began in the first place. Is there a crack in your flooring that brought pests in? Get it fixed. Is there a habit that food is left out? Change the practice. This will keep these pests from coming back again and again.

How to Treat the Sting of Bees, Wasps and Yellow jackets in Sydney

Posted by admin

bee-control_04

While Yellow jackets, hornets and wasps tend to sting repeatedly during an attack, bees are equipped with barbed stingers that typically become lodged in the skin and rip away, along with the venom sac, from the insect’s body at the time of the sting. Therefore, if stung, it is important to remove the stinger as rapidly as possible by any means possible, because venom can continue to be released for several seconds. All stingers should be removed because if left in place they may cause a foreign body reaction or become infected.

Bee-control_05

Symptoms of an infection include increased redness, swelling, and pain three to five days after the sting, or development of fever and chills. If stung, it is important to immediately clean the area with soap and cold water and to use a cold compression such as ice or an ice pack. If the sting is an extremity, it is helpful to elevate the limb.

bee-control_10

If needed, over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help reduce pain, while an antihistamine and hydrocortisone ointment can help calm the local reaction. In case the local reaction worsens, healthcare providers may prescribe an oral steroid or antihistamine to help calm theswelling or itching.

bee-control_06

People should seek out emergency medical assistance or call 000 if they experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as tongue and throat swelling, wheezing, dizziness, shortness of breath or drop in blood pressure. Anyone allergic to stinging insects or a parent of a child who is allergic, should learn how to use and equip themselves with an epinephrine kit and carry it with them at all times

bee-control_03If you suspect an infestation or notice a hive or nest on your property, give us a call we can safely remove the threat. Do not try to do it yourself. And remember prevention is always much better.

Spring is here and Stinging Insects are ready to strike.

Posted by admin

bee-control_07

The spring and summer months, while the most enjoyable time of the year for many people, also bring the risk of painful insect stings from bees, wasps and Yellow jackets as humans and insects spend more time together in the great outdoors. In general, these insects tend to sting people or animals when they feel threatened or perceive a threat to their nests or hives. Regardless, of the circumstances, people who get stung will immediately feel a sharp, burning pain, rapidly followed by a red welt at the sting site, with a small, white spot at the center marking where the stinger punctured the skin.

bee-control_01

In most cases, the swelling and pain resolves within a few hours, however, as many as 10 percent of individuals develop a large local reaction experiencing exaggerated redness and swelling at the sting site that continues to gradually enlarge to around four-inches in diameter. After peaking around the second day, these reactions resolve over a period of five to 10 days.

bee-control_09

In rare cases, approximately 3 percent of the public, individuals experience an extreme allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. These reactions may be life threatening and require immediate medical treatment. Symptoms of anaphylaxis include generalized itching, rashes or hives, tightness or swelling in the throat, upset stomach, including pain, nausea and vomiting, as well as dizziness. In one percent of anaphylaxis cases, people may experience severe shortness of breath, a drop in blood pressure, loss of consciousness and shock.

Preventing the Sting of from bees, wasps and Yellowjackets in Sydney
The best way to avoid the sting is to avoid attracting stinging insects in the first place.

  • Trim vegetation near your home, as thick vegetation may provide nesting places for wasps and bees. Yellow jackets and wasps often nest in ground under porches. If you, or a family member, are allergic to bee stings, it’s best to keep flowering plants to a minimum on the property.
  • Over seed grassy areas to get better coverage, as this will deter ground-nesting insects.
  • Keep garbage in sealed receptacles and thoroughly rinse soda cans and other containers before placing them in recycling or garbage receptacles.
  • Do not leave sweet drinks or meats in accessible areas and serve drinks in clear cups so you can easily spot an insect before you sip. Keep food covered in outdoor areas and be sure to remove food and trash after picnics and outdoor events.
  • Note that DEET and other insect repellents are not effective against bees, wasps and hornets.
  • Do not swat at stinging insects as it may provoke them. Instead, gently blow on it from a distance.

Ants Control/Prevention in Sydney

Simple Prevention Tips You Can Do Today To Reduce Ants

Pest-Control-Ants-300x189

If you have never encountered ants in your house, office or school, count yourself among the lucky few. But, if you’re like most people, you’ve fought your fair share of battles against these annoying pests ants – whether it’s a nest of garden ants in your garage or a parade of black house ants marching across your kitchen counter.

Below, we offer you some simple steps about ant control that homeowners can take to reduce the chances of unintentionally inviting ants into their home or business and/or getting rid of ants.

Ant-Control1Know the popular hangouts
It’s probably not surprising to hear that ants most frequently infest kitchens. After all, kitchens are full of food and water, everything ants (as well as all other pests) need to survive. Bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, basements, inside walls, and in/around air conditioning and heating units are also known to attract ants.

Eliminate water sources

Bull-Ants1

Reducing moisture and standing water around your home can go a long way to help prevent ants. Repair leaky pipes, and routinely check under sinks for areas of moisture. Consider using a dehumidifier in damp basements, crawl spaces or attics. Outside, ensure that downspouts and gutters are functioning properly so that water flows away from the home’s foundation and ants are not attracted.

Eliminate food sources

Black-House-Ants2Keeping your kitchen tidy will help to discourage ants from coming indoors. Wipe down counters and sweep floors regularly to eliminate crumbs and residue from spills. Store food in sealed pest-proof containers, and keep ripe fruit in the refrigerator. Wipe down sticky jars, especially any containing honey, syrup, soda or other sweets. Finally, use a lid on rubbish bins and dispose of garbage regularly.

Getting-Rid-of-Ants3

Don’t discount your pets

Cats, dogs and other pets can inadvertently invite ants into your home. Their food and water bowls are an attractant for ants and pests, so be sure to keep pet bowls clean and clean up any spilled food or water promptly. Opt to store dry pet food in a sealed plastic container rather than the paper or plastic bags they often come in, which can be easily accessed by ants and other pests. Inspect dog/cat doors to ensure that ants and pests cannot get through. Remember that ants can fit through even the tiniest openings.

Ants-In-House5Block off or eliminate access points
Take time to inspect the outside of your home for easy access points for ants. Trees and bushes should be trimmed away from the home, as branches can provide highways indoors for ants. Seal any cracks and crevices on the outside of the home with silicone caulk, paying special attention to areas where utility pipes enter.

Fire-AntsDon’t go it alone
Without the proper training and tools, battling ants can be an uphill battle. What’s worse, an infestation can continue to grow if it is not properly treated. Some species of ants can cause serious property damage (like carpenter ants) and others (like fire ants) can pose health threats to your family. Even species that are considered nuisance pests (like common black house ants) can contaminate food.
So if you do find ants in your home or business, call us right away for an ant pest control treatment. We will be able to identify the ant species, spot likely entry points, and determine an effective course of ant pest control treatment with products that are safe for your family, pets and the environment.

Asthma Study Examines Benefits of IPM on Rodents

Posted by admin

Asthmatic children suffering from persistent wheezing or difficulty in breathing are often treated in emergency rooms and then return home to the very environment that triggers their asthma attacks. Yet, with proper intervention, including pest control, the frequency of asthma attacks in some children and the need for costly trips to an emergency room can be reduced. A five-year study in the US is taking a close look at how Integrated Pest Management (IPM) intervention can help children with asthma.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_041-300x236Dr Wanda Phipatanakul, a paediatric allergist and associate professor of paediatrics at Harvard Medical School said, “Lots of kids have problems because of their home environment. That’s because one of the most predominant urban indoor allergens that cause and trigger asthma is ‘Musm 1’, the allergen found in the hair, saliva, urine and faeces of mice or rodents. The sensitivity of mouse or rodent allergen makes children susceptible to developing or worsening asthma symptoms that can lead to hospitalisation. “We know from a pilot study that IPM intervention can reduce mouse or rodent allergen levels significantly, by a much as 75 to 80 per cent,” Dr Phipatanakul pointed out.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_03-300x236

Her work on 2004 National Institute of Health study found that with IPM practices, allergen levels decreased in kitchens by 78.8 per cent and in bedrooms by 77.3 per cent.

“Reducing allergen levels significantly correlates with reduced complications of asthma, including fewer unscheduled asthma-related hospital visits,” she emphasised.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_02-300x236The US study will examine whether IPM intervention is superior to IPM education alone in reducing mouse or rodent allergen levels, as well as asthma symptoms and the need for rescue medication in asthmatic children who are sensitised to the mouse or rodent allergen.

Over a five-year period researchers will track 350 families, with children aged 6-17 with moderate to severe asthma who are sensitised to mice or rodents and have a high mouse or rodent allergen level.

Over a five-year period researchers will track 350 families, with children aged 6-17 with moderate to severe asthma who are sensitised to mice or rodents and have a high mouse or rodent allergen level.

Families who commit to the study are placed in either the IPM group to receive immediate IPM intervention, or in the control or education group, which receives training and information, but no intervention until the study is completed.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_01-300x236The study basically examines whether removing mice or rodents and their remnants from the home environment of kids with asthma will reduce allergens and that the kid’s health will improve.

Because bait is restricted by the protocol, control measure focus on exclusion, housekeeping practices, such a getting rid of rubbish, proper storage practices, and trapping, which is exactly the core of Integrated Pest Management (IPM). Once technicians identify where mice or rodents are moving, they can use a tracking powder in holes, before sealing up holes and voids.

Glue traps and snap traps are used and due to concerns about peanut butter allergies were baited with Bell’s Provoke Professional Mouse Attractant. Provoke is a non-toxic, hypoallergenic attractant technicians use in schools, food production plants and other places where peanut butter is prohibited or not recommended.

Typically, technicians place six snap traps baited with Provoke in the kitchen and three each in other rooms, along with glue boards.

The study could demonstrate that IPM intervention is a promising, cost-effective way to help high-risk asthma patients and highlight the importance of mouse or rodent control in preventing asthma.

Flea Control in Sydney

Posted by admin

Fleas are parasites that feed on the blood of any warm-blooded host. They are wingless, with mouthparts adapted for piercing skin and sucking blood. The most common species of flea is the cat flea, which often feasts on cats, dogs and humans.

flea-lifecycle_01

Threats:
Their saliva can cause serious flea allergy dermatitis, in pets and their debris has been reported to cause similar allergic reactions in humans. Fleas can also transfer tapeworms and cause anemia in pets. Flea bites commonly cause painful, itchy red bumps.

2

Flea bites generally result in the formation of a slightly raised, swollen itching spot with a single puncture point at the center (similar to a mosquito bite). The bites often appear in clusters or lines of two bites, and can remain itchy and inflamed for up to several weeks afterwards. Fleas can also lead to hair loss as a result of frequent scratching and biting by the animal, and can cause anemia in extreme cases.

34

Prevention

The first thing you should know is that it’s important to act fast with a flea control programme. Infestations pop up quickly and can be very difficult to control once inside the home

  • itchy-dog-2-300x300Clean and vacuum frequently to help remove flea populations and prevent the laying of flea eggs.
  • Keep your lawn groomed. Untended lawns provide hiding spots and food sources for rodents and other animals that fleas feed on.
  • Protect pets by practicing active flea management.
  • Keep pets on a leash when outside, bathe and groom them regularly, visit a veterinarian annually and use a flea treatment according to directions. Also remember that products that are dropped on the skin of cats and dogs make the blood of those animals toxic to the adult fleas that then feed on them. The larvae of fleas do not feed on the blood from your pets.

The larvae feed on dust largely comprised of the dead skin cells of the pets and people in the house. So the products used to treat pets only kill adult fleas and only when they have sucked the blood of the treated pet.

  • Treatment of pets alone can control fleas once all the eggs, larvae and pupae have become adults, fed on the pets and died before laying more eggs.
  • Best flea control can be achieved by a combination of treating the pets and treating the areas where the eggs, larvae and pupae are living.
  • Fleas can hitch rides on rodents or possums. If you notice a rodent problem on your property, fleas are just one more reason to call a pest control professional immediately to remedy the problem.
  • If you suspect a flea infestation in your home, contact a licensed pest professional for a flea control programme.
  • Getting rid of adult fleas alone will not solve your problem.
  • If you find adult fleas, then there may also be hundreds of eggs in your home. These eggs can take seven to 14 days to hatch and the infestation cycle will continue. At Easy On Earth Pest Control we can rid your home of both adult fleas and larvae just give us a call and we can help with your flea problem.

Bed Bugs Control in Sydney

Posted by admin

61What are bed bugs?

The common bed bug (Cimexlectularius Linnaeus 1758) is an ectoparisite insect (a parasite which lives on the outside of the body of the host) of the family Cimicidae.

Bed bugs feed only on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded hosts. Although bed bugs have a cryptic behavior and can conceal themselves in tight cracks and crevices, bed bugs are often found in bed parts, such as mattresses and box springs, hence the common name.

Bed Bugs Life Cycle

Untitled-2

Threats
Bed Bug bite images and bed bugs symptoms
Although bed bugs can dine on any warm-blooded animal, they primarily dine on humans. Bed bugs do not transmit diseases, but their bites can become red, itchy welts.

Bed bug bites do not hurt; bites may result in an itchy welt which causes discomfort and can lead to secondary infection of the bite wound due to scratching.

Treating the bites soothes the irritation, but it can still be very distressing when there are multiple bites which sometimes occur with bed bugs.

Untitled-4

Bed Bug Detection and Prevention
Bed bugs signs and how to rid bed bugs?

Untitled-6

When Traveling

  • Vacuum suitcases after returning from a vacation.
  • Regularly inspect areas where pets sleep for signs of bed bugs.
  • Change your bed linens often. Inspect bedding for shed bed bug skins and blood spots
  • Inspect hotel rooms before you settle in. Set your luggage away from walls and furniture, including the bed.
  • Check your bedsheets for tell-tale blood spots.
  • Consider bringing a large plastic trashbag to keep your suitcase in during hotel stays.
  • Carry a small flashlight to assist you with quick visual inspections.

When Home

  • When you get home from travelling, inspect your suitcase. Store clothes in a sealed plastic bag until they can be washed and dried on high heat.
  • Examine secondhand furniture before bringing it home or even better never bring second-hand furniture, especially mattresses and box springs, into a home without thoroughly examining for signs of a bed bug infestation. You might consider having a pest control professional inspect the furniture as it is difficult to detect an infestation if you are untrained.
  • If you suspect you have bed bugs, don’t just sleep in a different room. This just expands the bed bugs territory.
  • It is imperative to seek professional pest control to address a bed bug infestation. Bed bugs are hard to make rid of and they are definitely not a DIY project.

How to choose a Pest Control Company in Sydney?

Posted by admin

Yesterday we received a call from a chemist and his wife who live up in Newcastle. They wanted our advise on what to look for in a pest control company and what to stay away from. Since we service Sydney and not their area, below are a few things you should question when your looking for a pest control company.

Pest problems arise from time to time that may require you to seek help controlling the pest from a professional pest controller. It can be daunting to choose a pest control company. Don’t rush into a decision. Consider talking with several companies before deciding on one. Even if your pest problem is urgent, take time to look for a reputable and knowledgeable company that meets your standards.

1Research the internet for reviews of the pest control

company?

These days, one of the best ways is to jump on the internet and check reviews from the pest control companies in your area. That will give you an idea of they performance and how well they meet their clients expectations.

After selecting a few, give them a call, see how they answer the phone are they welling to discuss your pest problems, does it sound like they care or they just want to book you in?

Calling the pest control company?

Ask them what kind of products they use and if they are willing to send you the MSDSs(Material Safety Data Sheets) of the product that they normally use to deal with your pest problem. Are those products safe for your health, children, pets and the environment?

Ask them how they apply those products and where they will apply them?

Are they happy to share estimations of the cost up front?

On arrival

How much time will they spend on your property, are they rushing around your property, a good pest control company will spend a good 30 to 45 min around your property at the start of their service just to determine the, what issues you have, level of infestation and the hot spots.

2Can the company identify the pests, explain the extent of the infestation, and provide details about the pest and its behavior?

Are they willing to discuss low-toxicity options and reducing environmental risks?

Do they have a strategy or advices to give you at the end of the treatment to avoid getting pests in the first place?

Check they have sufficient insurance, accidents do happen and if they don’t have insurance, you are facing the hassle and cost.

Ask them about the service warranties, are they willing to come back if the pests do and will it be any additional cost?

3
On arrival again request MSDS and don’t feel afraid to ask for the pest control license of the technician. You will be surprise of the amount of cowboys that are out there that do not have a license and are practicing this trade.

At the end of the treatment don’t forget to jump on the net and review their performance and efficacy, poor or great. It is crucial that the general public know what types of companies are out there and how much they care about satisfying your pest control needs.

It may sound like a lot to ask but remember that your health and the health of your family is at stake.

Cockroaches Control in Sydney

Posted by admin

How to get rid of cockroaches in your home in Sydney?

The cockroach is believed to spread a range of disease-producing organisms to humans including salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus. Cockroaches prefer warm, humid conditions with a ready food source.

What are cockroaches?

Cockroaches are one of the most commonly noted household pest insects and there are many species of cockroaches. They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odor. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans. Cockroaches have been known to be linked with allergic reactions in humans. One of the proteins that trigger allergic reactions has been identified as tropomyosin. These allergens have also been linked to asthma, there for a treatment for cockroaches needs to be eco friendly.

German-Cockroach-german-cockroaches-german-cockroach-control-cockroach-control-sydney-cockroaches-control_01Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their feces, as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. These chemical trails transmit bacteria onto surfaces. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water, and also discover where other cockroaches are hiding. Thus, cockroaches can exhibit emergent behavior, in which group or swarm behavior emerges from a simple set of individual interactions.

Cockroaches are generally omnivorous that basically mean that they can eat anything.

Cockroaches Control can be difficult in Sydney. By nature, cockroaches are survives that breed really quickly and that means that if you see a few crawling around they can easily become hundreds in a matter of weeks.

Cockroaches may spread a range of diseases.

It is believed that the cockroach may be a reservoir for a range of bacteria including salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus. The cockroach can also harbour viruses.

German-Cockroach-german-cockroaches-german-cockroach-control-cockroach-control-sydney-cockroaches-control_02-236x300Like the household fly, the cockroach will eat virtually anything ranging from food spills on a kitchen floor to fecal matter. Ingested bacteria can survive in the cockroach’s digestive system, sometimes for months or even years, and are passed in its droppings. Cockroaches will vomit and defecate on food and it is thought that disease may be transmitted to humans when humans eat food contaminated by cockroaches.

Recent research suggests that the cockroach may also be associated with human allergies and that is a fear factor to be acknowledged.

Where cockroaches live and there common hiding spots in your home?

Cockroaches prefer to live in kitchens and other food preparation areas, so they can feed off food spills and have access to water. Hiding spots for the household cockroach include:

  • Cracks in walls
  • Confined spaces, such as behind the refrigerator, in a pantry or underneath a stack of magazines, newspapers or cardboard boxes
  • Any furniture items that are generally left undisturbed
  • Kitchen cupboards
  • Below sinks
  • In the dishwasher
  • In the Microwaves
  • Around hotwater systems
  • In drains and grease traps
  • Gardens

German-Cockroach-german-cockroaches-german-cockroach-control-cockroach-control-sydney-cockroaches-control_031-300x236How to get rid of cockroaches?

Getting rid of cockroaches in Sydney can be quiet difficult.

Here we offer homeowners these tips to protect their families and properties from cockroach infestations in Sydney:

  • Keep a spotless kitchen and other food preparation areas. Clean behind and under appliances regularly, as these are favourite hiding spots for cockroaches where crumbs and trash are more likely to build up.
  • Do not leave fruit or food on the kitchen benches overnight.
  • Keeping all food stored away in sealed containers.
  • Dispose of garbage regularly and store in sealed containers.
  • Vacuum. Early and often is best for reducing harmful cockroach allergens.
  • It is also helpful to seal off any entry points, such as holes around baseboards, between kitchen cabinets, pipes, doors, and windows with some steel wool or copper mesh and some cement, putty or silicone caulk.
  • Keep basements and crawl spaces well ventilated and dry
  • Don’t water the cockroaches! Cockroaches can survive months without eating, but they need a daily source of water to thrive. Never leave water in the sink, in dirty dishes, or other areas of the house. Check other sources of water as well, such as leaky plumbing, under- refrigerator dampness, and concrete sweating. Wipe all traces of water from the sink after you’ve done the dishes and wipe down the bath area after use.
  • Thoroughly clean the house at least weekly.
  • Clean regularly underneath the fridge, stove, toaster and other movable appliances.
  • Do not leave out pets’ food or food scraps in pet bowls.
  • Clean up any food spills promptly.
  • Repair any holes, cracks or gaps in the walls, skirting boards and inside cupboards.
  • Don’t stack newspapers, magazines or cardboard boxes anywhere in the house.
  • Clothes and other household articles should not be kept on the floor.
  • Screening windows and doors.
  • Keep compost bins screened and away from the house.
  • Try to keep rubbish bins away from your house.
  • Trim bushes near air vents to keep cockroaches from getting into the house.
  • Keep your yard clean and rubbish free and make adequate arrangements for both liquid and solid waste disposal.

Act quickly. If you find evidence of an infestation, contact a licensed pest professional to inspect and treat the cockroach problem with an organic cockroach control treatment. Once you’ve seen cockroaches in your home or apartment, odds are there are many more out of view and if left unattended for a long period of time may result in getting rid of cockroaches, that more costly for you.

German-Cockroach-german-cockroaches-german-cockroach-control-cockroach-control-sydney-cockroaches-control_04-300x136Since Cockroaches can be difficult to eliminate from your home and after implementing the past tips you still have problems just give us a call. Mice, Rats, Rodents and Residential Pest Control in Sydney

Mice, Rats and Rodents as pests, can be very annoying creatures. They can easily start affecting and disturbing your rest cycles, awaken you in the middle of the night with loud scampering gnawing and some times even fighting in your cavity roof, walls or subfloor.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_19-300x237

They are sociable creatures, so if you see one, there is probably more around and they are capable of inflicting a great deal of damage to your property and your personal health, kids and even your pets.

Mice, Rats and Rodents Damage in Sydney

Rodent problems inside the home should be treated immediately because they can cause significant damage to wiring and been known to chew through floor joists and walls.

Rodent control is something that should be taken very seriously. As seen in these images, on one of our past rodent inspections/treatments, we found all the wiring under the stove damaged. It was fortunate for the client they called us just in time, as a fire could have broken out because of a short circuit.

Rodent-Control-Sydney-Rat-Control-Rodent-Control_03-300x236

This is another case where roof rats gnawed on these light fighting and they were electrocuted, clearly rat control was necessary. A very lucky client, as you can see in the image the flames affected a bit of the beam and it could of started a fire as the insulation was next to it.

Rats have very sharp and powerful teeth that can gnaw through materials.

Rats can also damage air conditioning ducting in cavity roofs or subfloors.

Rodents can enter a building through almost any opening or crack (check the following picture below). It is important with rodent control, to inspect for rodent droppings, especially in undisturbed areas such as pantries, under baseboards and along walls. Rats dropping most often cause allergic reactions in humans, but can also cause disease, including the potentially deadly Hantavirus. More frequently, though, rodents serve as vectors, carrying bacteria, such as salmonella, on their bodies and contaminating food sources, kitchen surfaces and electrical appliances. They can also spread other pests throughout your home, especially fleas and mites.

What can you do to keep mice, rats and rodents away from your home in Sydney?

Rodents are mammals just like us so eliminating food, water and shelter is vital to an effective rodent control program.

To keep mice and other rats or rodents out, make sure all holes of larger diameter than a pencil are sealed. Mice can squeeze through spaces as small as a dime.

Below are a few tips in how to prevent mice, rats and rodents from your home:

  • Seal cracks and holes on the outside of the home including entry points from utilities and pipes.
  • Keep tree branches and shrubbery well trimmed and away from the house.
  • Keep food in sealed containers or in the fridge.
  • Empty all rubbish bins at the end of each day, no rubbish or food to be left over night.
  • Get lids for all rubbish bins and clean them once a week.
  • Seal very carefully all the edges to the skirting boards and gaps between subfloor and flooring.
  • Keep basements, attics, and crawl spaces well ventilated, dry and with the door closed.
  • Store garbage in sealed containers and dispose of it regularly. Don’t wait until the bins are overflowing to dispose it.
  • Try to keep rubbish bins away from your house.
  • Repair fascia and rotted roof shingles.
  • Always install gutters or diverts which will channel water away from the building.
  • Replace weather-stripping and repair loose mortar around basement foundation and windows.
  • Screening windows and doors.
  • Remove pet food bowls after each meal.
  • This one may sound like common sense but since Rats are nocturnal (ie more active at night) make sure you close the doors at the start of every evening.

Do not leave fruit or food on the kitchen benches overnight to help with rodent control.

How to control mice, rats and rodents in Sydney?
Many times when we carry out our normal pest control Inspections we find rodent activity.A lot of people leave the issue for many years untreated. In some cases the insulation in their cavity roof is too thick so they are unaware of the rodents. They tend to pee and poo and breed in the same spot and the occupant can have really no idea that they have been living with them until the gyprock in the ceiling collapses or the smell is really bad. Only then do they realise they have a rat problem and require rodent control solutions in their homes.
Rats, mice and rodents use the insulation to make little tiny tunnels to pee, poo and breed inside.

How do mice, rats and rodents look like in Sydney?

In Sydney the most common rodents are:

House Mice in Sydney

The house mouse is the most common rodent pest in Sydney and most parts of the world. It can breed rapidly and adapt quickly to changing conditions. A family of 6 mice in a cluttered garage can grow to 50-60 mice in only 90 days.

Norway Rats in Sydney

Roof Rats in Sydney

What are roof rats? Roof rats get their name from their tendency to be found in the upper parts of buildings, but can be also found in subfloors. Ranging in size from 6 to 8 inches in length, not including their tails, they have very poor vision and are colour blind. They do have extremely strong senses of hearing, smell, touch and taste. Extra pads and longer digits on their paws enable roof rats to be excellent climbers
