How to protect your home / business from Termites in a green way?

Posted by admin

We know how badly termites can damage a building and how expensive it can be to then fix the issue.

This month, I want to write about the old way of protecting your property from termite damage and one of the new ways, a green way, to manage termite activity.

Old Way

In order for your pest manager to protect your home from termites they must create a barrier that is complete and continuous. In order to do this, it is ESSENTIAL that the pest manager dig a trench around your property. This is then flooded with large volumes of the liquid chemical. After this it needs to be back-filled with additional chemical. This is expensive and time consuming, not to mention the hundreds of liters of chemicals that is needed to be injected into the soil around your home. Of course pest managers don’t always do this, leaving pockets in between and around your property making the treatment less effective. Furthermore, you need to keep well away while all this is going on…. Do you really want toxic chemicals around your home?

Green Way, the Best way!

Here is one of those green Termite Interception and Baiting Systems. It is called Exterra and this system offers an elite standard in termite management.

It is certainly long term, effective, family-safe and environmentally responsible termite management. It utilises in-ground closed and locked stations that are placed around your home every 3 meters approximately apart. Then a Termite Attractant is placed in the stations, this attractant is non-toxic, its a food base additive that once in contact with the soil it works with soil micro-organisms to slowly release a small, precisely determined amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the soil. Termites love CO2, this attractant works by mimicking those natural smells of both rotting wood and termite nests, so the CO2 in the soil directs termites to potential feeding sites. Exterra stations are doing its job, by naturally directing the termites to an Exterra station and not your home. Don’t worry this attractant just attracts termites that are foraging for food really close to your property so its not attracting termites to your place. If the stations weren’t there then these termites would eventually seek out and attack your home. In the Stations Eucalypt timber interceptors are used simply because studies have shown that this timber is the most favoured by termites. If it seems like a good meal to termites they will hungrily enter the Station, which mean they will be eliminated.

With this system you get protection, a product that actually eliminates the entire termite colony and does so without harming the environment and is safe for you, your family and pets and of course and there is no need for you to leave your home while the treatment is carried out.

Plus when you install Exterra Termite Interception System you will be supporting Australian Wildlife Conservancy and securing 22 acres of vital habitat for Australia’s threatened wildlife. How is that for a little contribution to our Mother Earth?

If your interested in finding out more, please give us a call and we can email or post you more information about this Termite Interception System and other termite interception systems.

As usual hope this helps, leave your comments or questions, and feel free to propose a topic for my blog.

The Importance of Regular Termite Inspections on Your Property

Posted by admin

Home Owners work hard to save and finally buy their biggest asset in life, their home, but very often they neglect the one thing that can take a significant amount of money from their pockets, that is Termite Activity.

Australian Standards recommend to get your house inspected for termite activity at least once a year.

If you neglect this Termite Inspection, termites can cause extensive damage. Many times putting the owner in the position of spending thousand of dollars on structural damage, in repairs and reducing significantly the chances of selling their property, since many people are scared of buying property with termites or past termite activity.

All these can be easily prevented with a simple annual termite inspection. Having someone to inspect your home regularly will definitely help to protect it from termites. If termites decide to enter “our home suit home” the damage will be minimal since regular inspection can detect termites at an early stage before they cause any significant damage.

Since you probably are not going to follow the technician and crawl into the subfloor and cavity roof, below are a few tips that may help you to chose an honest and reliable Termite Inspector and a few considerations on when to get a Termite Inspection done.

  • The subfloor and cavity roof are often places where you are most likely to find termites. Make sure you prepare access to every area, otherwise the technician will document these non-access areas as a restriction in their report. Move furniture from manholes so Termite Inspectors don’t have excuses to not inspect those areas and look at their overalls when they exit the manholes. If their overalls are very dirty, its a sign the termite inspector took the time to crawl around an inspect all areas :-) .
  • Make sure the Termite Inspector is spending the right time on your property. An average of 2 hours is usually normal, but if you see them spend less than half and hour, alarm bells should be ringing. Remember that the Termite Inspectors should check every single piece of timber in the house and externally around the property eg: window and door frames, all walls, crawl in the subfloor and cavity roof if present, fence lines, trees, etc. It’s unlikely a thorough termite inspection would be carried out in only half and hour, make sure you are getting value for money.

  • These days their are many instruments that may help the termite inspector to detect termite activity eg: Infrared cameras, moisture meters, inspection cameras, etc. Make sure they are using these tools. Many times you will find technicians knocking on a few window frames, only with a screw driver. Termites can eat deeper into the timber, so a screw driver alone will not help them to detect activity.

Last year, a Termite Inspection was carried out at my home. The Inspector was unaware that I was a Pest controller and I let him proceed with his inspection routine. He started to slide his hand over the window frames and door frames, when I asked him what was the theory behind that, he simply replied by saying he could hear and smell them. After 20 minutes the inspection had finished and he hadn’t even checked the subfloor or cavity roof. I can’t strongly stress how important it is to find good Termite Inspector. Their are plenty of dishonest cowboys out there taking money from good honest people.

  • It’s recommendable to use the same pest control company or technician to do your termite inspection, as they are familiar with your property and most likely have the history of your property on file.
  • Make sure you ask the termite inspector how many years they have been inspecting properties for termites and don’t feel afraid to ask to see their termite license. Over the years, I have come across technicians that don’t even know what a termite looks like and have carried out hundreds of termite inspections.

In fact just last month I come a cross three properties that had a pre-purchase termite inspection carried out and the owners bought the house based on this report. They called us for a second opinion and I found active termites and extensive termite damage in all three properties. The termite damage was evident and not sure how it was missed. I have attached some photos of the damage that I found.

A Few Tips on How to Get Rid of Spiders at Home or in your Business

Posted by admin

First and foremost, it’s important to understand spiders. While the specific biology and habits of each species differs, all spiders are predatory and typically feed on small insects. Some spiders are categorised as sedentary web-builders that rely on prey becoming entangled in a sticky web, while others are stealthy, efficient hunters that move about in search of prey.

With the exception of a few medically important species, this predatory habit of spiders makes them beneficial to homeowners because they reduce the number of insects that enter our living spaces. Without the predatory activities of spiders, we would be overrun with insect problems.

Here is a list of tips for reducing spider-conducive conditions, particularly food and harborages.

  • Seal Entryways: Spiders find entry into structures around doors, windows, utility piping, air vents, weep holes in masonry and other openings. Where possible, seal these entry points by caulking, repairing vent components, replacing weather-stripping, and placing screen or air-permeable material in weep holes.

  • Reduce Clutter: Spiders and their insect prey thrive on the multitude of harborage opportunities afforded by cluttered storage areas such as garages, storerooms, attics or laundry rooms. Boxes in attics are a common harborage for dangerous spiders and other spiders. Removing clutter and  organizing stored materials on wall shelving, and not on the floor.

  • Remove Webs: Removing webs with a vacuum or a “Webster” can be a very effective procedure for reducing spider problems. Not only does web removal eliminate the unsightly web itself, many spiders are removed in the process.

  • Manage Outdoor Lighting: Outdoor lighting is usually positioned for security purposes, but insects that occur around structural entry points are influenced by lighting type and installation. Because insects tend to rest on surfaces that are lit or are within a few feet of light source fixtures, spiders are also drawn to these areas in search of prey.

Light sources that radiate ultraviolet energy and blue light are most attractive to flying insects, while lights with a deficiency of ultraviolet and blue are less attractive. Insects see fluorescent black lights, mercury, and metal halide best. Insects have a difficult time seeing incandescent, high-pressure sodium and bug light incandescent (yellow) lamps. Position lighting to minimize lit surfaces close to windows and doors so spiders and insect prey are not directed towards structural entry points. How to Prevent Household Bugs and Rodent from our Home or Business

Posted by admin

Conventional-PC-Guy-300x239One of the biggest problems that we face everyday is to try to educate our clients about prevention, it seems to me that as a society we are preferring to move towards the quick fixes, without thinking about the consequences of those little actions. A challenge I face everyday as a pest control technician, is to pass these practical easy tips to my clients so we can help them to keep crippy crawlies away from their properties.
Pest Control begins as a need of humans to exterminate organisms that disturb their comfort or damage their health or property. Many pests have only become a problem because of the direct actions of humans. Modifying these actions can substantially reduce the pest problems.
